Anthony McCall - Raised Voices - Spruth Magers - Mayfair, London

This large scale immersive installation at Spruth Magers is part of McCall's 'solid light' works that occupy a space between cinema, sculpture and drawing. The sculptural forms that are created by projecting through heavily hazed spaces are very much a cultural touchstone for us. Read more ...

We have had the pleasure of being involved in the installation/performance of 'Line Describing a Cone' in its celluloid analog form. This more recent piece 'Raised Voices' 2024 at Spruth Magers, London has been created with digital projection. The method for crafting sculptural shapes remains consistent no matter which form of projection method is used - an animation is projected into a quite heavily hazed space. Lines are picked up in the air, and as the animation progresses a sculpture is formed from light and smoke. These works are so simple in their conception, and are an excellent expression of the ideas that were floating around the Art Scene in the 1970's and beyond. To make an animation of a line creating a circle is so pared down, but then to project that animation and transfer its essence into a three dimensional, sculptural form was an exciting act when it was first performed. It is a simple 'trick' that has excited new audiences in London in 2024, both at the Tate Gallery and at Spruth Magers
